"Art is where the heart is" and so is your studio space! I am off to enjoy some holiday fun in the sun and will certainly bring a little piece of my studio with me. I am looking forward to relaxing and having lots of time to journal and create new things. I created my little portable art kit with paper, a small paint set and pencil crayons. Hi there. My name is Mary Ann and I have a confession…..I am an Upcycler.

Actually I grew up upcycling before the word was even vogue. Coming from a family of 6 kids and being the youngest my parents were upcyclers as well. This was just natural to them as they were born in the early 1900’s when things were never thrown out. It just was unheard of. I remember watching my grandmother make rugs from old clothes, mittens from old sweaters. She would sew them on her old Singer Sewing machine. My mother had a sewing machine which she only used for patching. I taught myself how to sew by making Barbie doll clothes from worn clothes. I still have that old machine and its wooden case but I now use a more modern one.

I was always creative and my mom, to keep me amused would scour the house to find me items for my craft addiction and would make glue from flour and water. How Eco is that!

I lived in the country and my siblings were quite a bit older than me. Friends didn’t live close by so I would amuse myself. Wildlife became an obsession. I would try to tame every chipmunk and chickadee I could see. I started to draw them and eventually started painting when my oldest brother bought me a paint-by-number set. Back in the 60’s they came as oil sets and I never had patience for the paint to dry before the next colour. I remember putting one on the hot air register and later found that I had created a Picasso from the forced hot air. I can still remember the smell of those oil paints. After that I asked for watercolour paints and now I love to paint using acrylics.

I still have that drive (call it an obsession) to create. You can find me every Saturday morning in the summer at yard sales. You can find me at the Thrift store at least 3 times a week in the winter months. Every item I pick up I look to see what it can be reinvented into. By night time that item has been upcycled into a new life. Spring is just around the corner and that means yard sale season. I just can’t wait to get out there to find more items I can recreate into something useful.

One Upcycle I’m particularly proud of are my teapot bird feeders and bird houses. I came up with the idea a few years ago. It just gives your garden that little bit of sparkle. All of my feeders and houses are made with the birds in mind. They are functional as well as pretty.

Other upcycles which I have sold quite a few of are my sweater mittens. Every thrift store I walk into I look for wool or fleece sweaters with birds, animals, nature embroidered or as part of the fabric. I try to incorporate those parts of the sweater to make the mittens unique. I also make them warm and I’ve had nothing but positive feedback from them. I also started to make leather mittens from old leather jackets and hand paint wildlife pictures on them to make them unique as well. This winter I started to make bomber hats with animal or bird patches to match the mittens I sell.

I started selling on Etsy just over a year ago and I’m a member of a few teams. I feel I’ve done well with my sales and it motivates me to create more. The Oh Canada Team is a great group of Canadians and are the most positive team I’ve been on. They are helpful, giving great feedback to our shops, pictures, items. Giving suggestions of other things we might want to consider making.

On another note, just recently I found the art of felting. I have taught myself using a You-Tube video and have purchased wool roving from fellow Estians. I hope to create my wildlife feltings as life like as I can. My most recent project is a chipmunk. The same animal I tried to tame all those years ago.

It’s sad that we live in a world that tosses away so much without a second thought. We need to teach our kids the art of upcycling. So much money would be saved, the world would be a cleaner place and our children’s creativity would make them more aware of their environment.

Hi there, I'm Norma from junquete's 5 & 10 Variety here on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/junquete .I have a huge variety of things that I both offer and make. I like to stay busy so I try anything once. If the once works then I stay at it.

I love to make anything into earrings. I got hooked on it while I was sick for three months and needed something to do. They were easy to do from the comfort of my couch while wrapped in a blanket and a heating pad.

I sell vintage because I have a need to connect with the past. I worked in two different antique stores at the same time so it was easy to send people to which ever store had what they needed. It was also fun to be in both stores in the same day. It really was fun watching customers shake their head over that one.

I started making my 'Purse N Boots' shoe purses to enter a contest to make a purse for under five dollars. I didn't even come close to winning it but I started to get hook on them. I've done about twenty to date. Some sold and others became gifts. I was always sure they wouldn't receive another one.

After many years of crafting, my necessity to create has turned into dreaming up embroidered hoop décor for every occasion. I'm inspired by all things vintage and I love to give an old piece of fabric new life again. I have memories of watching my mother and grandmother embroider and it has a sense of comfort for me.

A favorite memory includes watching my grandmother sort her thread in an outdated TV guide. I'm thrilled to send off my hoops to be enjoyed and a part of someone’s life and hopefully become an heirloom.

I used to have a studio but when my twins came along my room has now been reduced to part of my living room. Thankfully my hoop décor adds an ever-changing design element in my home. My favorite organizational tool is a red vintage rectangle basket~ it holds my basic tools for creating my goods. I’m in the process of transforming a handmade hutch into my mini studio.

When I am not on playing with hoops and vintage notions, I am CEO of my little homestead which includes a wonderful math teacher husband, a book addicted 6 year old daughter and cape wearing 3 ½ year old boy/girl twins.

I started out making jewelry and sewing hand bags and costume pieces out of recycled fabrics- mostly because I spent a few summers working at a renaissance faire and fell in love with historically inspired fashions. Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved soaps and other toiletries. I used to pour fruit juice in petroleum jelly and call it lip gloss. What I’m doing now is slightly more sophisticated than that. I’m making soaps and slowly expanding to perfumes, lip balms, bath salts, sugar scrubs, etc.

My studio is mainly the guest room/library in the apartment I live in with my father while I’m going to school. That’s where everything is cured and stored. Most of my things are actually made in the kitchen- sometimes it drives my family a little crazy. Due to an incident with some lavender, I’ve learned to be very specific about what bowls and pans are for family food use and which are for my experiments. They are kept in different cabinets and the two never meet.

Plastic bins have become my best friends. I’m not naturally very organized- my mind is generally organized, my physical spaces are not. I like to say I’m like Sherlock Holmes in this regard, it makes me feel better.

At college I study English, I’m hoping to be a journalist when I graduate and also hopefully publish some novels. I’d love for my Etsy shop to help supplement my income eventually- it is not yet. My parents are, of course, concerned with how I’m going make money. As long as I stay off the streets and am doing what makes me happy, I’m not really worried. In that regard I like to spew a bunch of Thoreau quotations to back myself up, here are a few of my favorites: “Men have become the tools of their tools.” “Not only must we be good, but we must also be good for something.”

I also love music when I work. Anything from Vivaldi to The Doors, to The Decemberists, to Florence + the Machine, to Billie Holiday. Sometimes I’ll just put my iPod on shuffle and rediscover my music collection.

I like to organize mine by magazine company and by theme, if they are mixed media books, textiles or jewelry. I keep them in baskets in my Studio for safe keeping and when they are organized, I know where to find them when I am inspired.

"Originally from Maine, I relocated to Southern California many years ago for its better weather.

Healthcare worker by day, in my spare time I work on my new creative pursuit: metal clay. I discovered an artist practicing this 10-year-old art form at a recent County Fair and I signed up for a class on the spot.

Until then, the extent of my art experience was years of outdoor photography; so it was with some trepidation that I approached my first silver clay class in late September. However, with the encouragement and expert guidance of my talented and experienced instructors, I quickly developed sufficient skills to establish a personal workspace at home. As a beginner it was difficult to know what tools I would need, so I did lots of reading and research online. My breakfast table has been transformed into an art clay workspace until I can build a suitable workshop. I organize my everyday tools in jars: brushes in one, clay shapers in another, files and picks in another, and so on. Decorative cutting scissors are well organized and close-at-hand in their own wooden lazy susan. A tackle box holds most other backup tools in a cupboard. The dollar store is a great source for plastic trays and boxes that I use to store many small supplies including my silver clay packets, paste and syringes. Early on, I purchased many templates and molds which I still occasionally use. My current preference is for unique patterns, textures and molds which I create with two-part silicone putty.

The Art Clay I use is made from 100% reclaimed silver and is very easy to work with - even for those of us with no former clay experience. When I'm planning a new piece, like this Mushrooms Miniature Sculpture

I use regular modeling clay to create a mockup of my intended creation; and that I can easily modify as I see fit. Unlike Art Clay I don't have to worry about modeling clay drying up; and it can be reused repeatedly.

Although I have a Dremel hand tool, I prefer the personal touch using diamond needle files and sponge polishing pads to finish the clay piece prior to firing. I was fortunate to find a used Paragon kiln on craigslist and now can enjoy firing multiple items simultaneously.

When I want to impart a softer satin finish to a piece like this branch (http://www.etsy.com/listing/64851420/pure-silver-split-satin-branch-pendant), after kiln firing, I brushed the piece with a brass brush. Afterwards, I used an artist brush to apply a patina to the textured portions of the pendant.

For a shiny, more reflective look such as this pendant (http://www.etsy.com/listing/64852071/pure-silver-split-glossy-branch-pendant), I tumbled it in a jeweler's rotary tumbler. Then I used an artist brush to apply a patina to the textured areas.

There is a great sense of satisfaction in creating a unique fine silver piece from a lump of clay. Always looking to broaden my repertoire, I'm already contemplating which metal clay I'd like to get my hands on next: steel, bronze, copper or gold. Either alone or in combination, working with metal clay offers enormous artistic creative opportunity."

I'm Jackie of EveryPrettyThing, and I make a ton of things! I started out with nursery art canvases with decoupaged animals, and then expanded into decoupaged jewelry boxes of all shapes and sizes, and then expanded into pillows inspired by my canvases.

I've recently added a dark-stained men's jewelry box (for cuff links and watches and such) that I absolutely love! I work in my half of the home office. It was getting a little cramped until I got a big table for craft fairs...we set it up to see how big it was, and it magically became my new crafting table! This may have irked the husband a little, but I think it's lovely! Now I have lots of room to spread out. The threat of "If it gets messy, it'll have to go!" is the best motivation for staying organized...I don't want to lose my big table!

I make very sure that I clean up every little scrap of paper every night (a task I used to be terrible about putting off until I was buried!). I find that if I clean my workspace every day, it doesn't get unmanageable. I know that seems like a no-brainer, but I'm a lazy thing and don't like to do that, so it was a big breakthrough for me!

"I currently work full time and enjoy creating gorgeous gifts to share on the weekends or whenever else time permits. I find I can easily lose myself in a pile of beads for hours on end, but on the plus side it is an interest that I can share with my two girls who really enjoy getting in and creating along side me.

I can't really remember how I came about making jewellery, it was something I casually stumbled upon but fell in love with once I did. I really love that people buy the items I make and get a lot of enjoyment from the fact that people all over the world have a piece of my jewellery!

Our names are Sarah and Tiff and we started Mistle and Toe, an eco-friendly design store. We are from Ohio and Minnesota respectively and became fast friends when we met in college. We started this as a Design Collective for both ourselves and for a few of our creative friends that will be joining us as the months go on. We are inspired by the creative possibilities and challenges of upcycling things to keep them out of the landfill and still make them beautiful! There seems to be a stigma around re-using goods, and we love the challenge of re-thinking and re-creating them into purposeful things once again. There is always a surplus of stuff, so what's not to create?

We wish we had studios where we could store all of our great supplies and have endless space to create, but for right now, we are making do with any space that is available in our respective homes. We like to call them our "craft lairs"! But Sarah's father just made her a shelf that has helped tremendously in organizing all of her supplies that correlate to specific items that she is making. We think that this is essential to being organized! And we also recommend focusing on one type of item before moving onto the next -- we love getting so excited about the possibilities of new wares, but fully finishing one line of items before starting the next has helped us to remain sane :)

When we are not creating wares for Mistle & Toe, Tiff is working on her own strategic sustainability consulting business to help small businesses and non-profits integrate sustainability and green initiatives into their organizations. That and training her little rescue dog :) And Sarah is doing community outreach for a charter school in Troy, NY.

I was reading some of the things that you would like to know and I guess I might be a little unconventional compared to some of the artists on Etsy. I do not have a studio or a special place to design my products or hardly a place to make them. I etched out a little corner space in my husbands office that completely annoys him with all my supplies and a very comfortable chair to do all my knitting, and for the Upsy Daisy line which I designed in line of keeping with mom's personal style which consists of Changing Pad Clutches, Diaper and Wipe Clutches, Designer Baby Wipe Cases, and Baby Tray Armor I have to use my dining room table.

I lug out my supplies, equipment, and materials every time I need to make something. Which is very inconvenient but being a stay at home mom of a 2 and 4 year old in a 1200 sq ft house I do not have many options. I stay as organized as I can but probably like most people things start getting in disarray causing me to waste a lot of time looking for the scissors or my pack of needles.

Since I did open up shop on Etsy I have learned a lot this past 8 months from how to improve my listing from the description to the photos which is an ongoing process but also to make sure you are always thinking on how to improve your products. Could this use an extra pocket or I should learn how to knit a different kind of stitch to make my products more desirable. The key is to keep improving and never give up step back every once in a while and look at your products in different ways see what new and exciting ideas come to you.

I have always been a creative person from the time I could pick up crayons. I started playing around with polymer clay about 2 and half years ago now, I had no clue what could be done with it when I got my first pack of clay and quickly learned ANYTHING could be done with it!

For about 2 years I was what I like to call a lap artist I didn’t have a desk or anything to work at, then I upgraded to a TV dinner table and now I have myself a real desk to work at! So now all my work it done there, well watching TV or listening to music.

I find my inspirations in everything, when I’m out I find myself looking at everything and thinking “ohh that would look cute as earrings or a necklace”. The things I make are really for anyone they are cute and corky, and I LOVE to make custom orders.

I like to bring the customers ideas to life for them. I also love making all the little beads that I sell in my shop, knowing that the buyers will be making something of their own with them is a great feeling and getting a picture from them of what they made with the beads is awesome!

I've been a very creative person since day one. I guess it's inherited, both my mother and my grandmother did oil painting and all kinds of crafts. I still have fond memories of quietly watching my mom paint for hours when I was five or six.

I learned how to make handmade bows when I worked at a local craft store, and when I lost my job, and was unable to find another one, I decided to use my creative talents and the knowledge that I had learned to start my own shop.

My goal with the bows and related items that I sell, is to make them appealing to all ages and walks of life. Bows aren't just ultra feminine, or stuff from grandma's attic. I try to use materials and techniques that make anyone of any age fall in love with them.

The only advice I can think to give others is "Use what you have!". I started out with practically no money to spare on materials for my shop, so I bought clearance items, I used materials that I already had stored up around my house (I'm a collector), and it's amazing the uses you can find for everyday items.

I am a writer and an artist (I’ve waited a long time to add that artist title, but I feel that I have finally earned it). I am passionate about creating one-of-a-kind art, antiquing, writing, photography and my family. My little Etsy shop, “Where the Grass is Greener,” is where I sell my art. I take ordinary objects, purchased at antique stores, flea markets and tag sales to create unique works of art for people’s homes. I also have an Etsy vintage shop called “Country Tag Sale.” That’s where I sell the vintage findings that I can’t bear to take apart and repurpose.

I love the thrill of the hunt for old things that can be recycled or upcycled. Basically, I see potential in other people's junk. The best part of finding vintage items is researching the history behind each item; I learn something every day and I love to share those stories when I can.

I began my business refurbishing and hand-painting furniture when I had a large studio to work in and store things. I recently lost my studio space, so now I’m concentrating on much smaller works of art (much easier to ship, too). While I have an office for writing, the back of my (very long) closet/laundry room serves as my little art studio – this tends to spread out to the rest of the house, though. The absolute best part of working on my own is the flexibility it allows me so I can spend time with my kids when they need me.

I’ve always been creative (or at least that’s what my friends and family tell me). My dad is very handy and my mom and sister are both artistic – my sis has a jewelry shop on Etsy, staciejewelry.

I have to admit that I am a completely scatterbrained jewelry designer and a lot of my jewelry is created by accident. My desk is always a mess and I frequently will set one part or piece next to another and then realize, those actually look great together. Although I do have an actual workspace, I don’t always utilize it the way one might imagine. I tend to assemble jewelry wherever I am. If I’m working on a necklace and I have to go into another room to get something, I tend to just walk and assemble. I probably picked this up from working at a bead store for 5 years where multitasking was a necessity.

I began designing jewelry while working at Bead It, a bead store in Austin, Texas that specializes in vintage and antique beads, parts and pieces. Prior to working there I had no interest in jewelry, let alone designing it. The history of my materials is what really sparked my love for making jewelry. Working there, I learned what made the pieces and beads worth more than the craft store bulk selection. I have only recently made the transition from bead (and parts) collector to jewelry designer.

I adore Etsy and my virtual shop. It’s a lot of work, and there are over 200,000 sellers on Etsy, so many of which are talented, hard working individuals. I’ve found that participating in the forums, reading seller blogs and the Seller’s Handbook are all really helpful tools. Also getting on social networking sites, joining Etsy teams and always having business cards ready are some of the best ways to increase exposure.

Being a designer, I’m not in it for the money, I can honestly say that. I want to offer people truly original creations and impress people with a little bit of history (as well as treasures to be coveted because you can’t get them in the mall or out of a catalogue). The idea of selling someone a necklace only to have them walk down the street and see someone wearing something similar seems disheartening. I get bored with trends pretty quickly and am always working hard to stick with the design that seems the least obvious. I strive for the strange and the imaginative. I am always aiming for the extraordinary.

Everyone starts off differently! I got started in the jewelry designing and making business by accident. In learning this art, I am basically self taught. I read a lot of books on jewelry making and later bought basic tools and supplies for my creations. The basic tools are pliers, cutters and not to mention lots of patience and passion. How delicate your craftsmanship comes with experience. There are marvelous sources of inspiration, know-how, and tips-n-tricks out there. Many are available online as e-books or e-course, books & magazines.

As this is not my full time job, I do not have a proper workplace. All I need is a space for me to lay out my tools and materials and I start creating.

You find lots of variety in my shop. Most of my items are inspired by the things around me. I love nature and life. I love new exciting ideas and trying them. I do not like sticking to the same old concepts. Thus I use all kinds of themes and all kinds of different materials in my creations. I love to get inspirations from all of them. I am excited to be selling my jewelry on Etsy. I live in New York, NY and work in my teeny tiny apartment on a folding tv table and sitting on my bed. I have jewelry materials all over my apartment, but have made everything ship shape by making my storage and projects part of my decor.  I work in sterling silver, gemstones, Czech glass, as well as copper and fabric. All of my work is one-of-a-kind, but I do take commissions as long as I am given the creative freedom to add my personality to each piece.  

My designs are based on my observations of the inter-relationships of materials and color. I have explored many different concepts over the years, from the ideas of impermanence and transience to the concept of the preciousness and sacredness of the everyday. Still, I want to create pieces that are accessible to a wide audience, and hope the forms and materials I use will appeal to people on many different levels. Treating each piece as an individual work of wearable art, I create timeless jewelry meant for day into evening wear.

I have had careers in production pottery, graphic design and industrial design with a sidetrack into computer programming early on. Ever since I can remember, art and craft in some shape or form has been my passion. I am a graduate of The College of Ceramics at SUNY with a BFA in sculpture and art history, an MFA in Arizona State University in environmental design, and an MID in industrial design from Pratt Institute.

A perpetual student, I am self-taught in jewelry. I have also written two books. Graphic Illustration in Black and White and Polymer Clay; Creating Functional and Decorative Objects.

My name is Ashley Ziemianski; I'm a 23 year old recent graduate living in Metro Detroit, Michigan. My entire life, I've never known what I've wanted to do "when I grew up." It would change all the time, and I never knew how to even go about doing most of the things I thought of (glad I didn't stick with the "Scientist" route - sorry about the bleached carpet, Dad!)

I only recently realized what the things I loved to do most were! I never even thought twice about the time I spend making graphics or taking photos; and I definitely never thought about selling my paintings.

I currently live with my boyfriend in his parents' old home. We have spent the last year modifying the entire home into something that we both enjoy. Neither of us consider it even close to "being there," but at least -we- know how much hard work has gone in so far.

The biggest bonus to this transition is my office! I've been a design student for over three years, and only after I graduated did I finally get a solid workspace. While I still do all of my messy painting outside (on the front porch), everything else happens right here in my orange-walled room! I probably spend 90% of my day there now that I'm unemployed and trying to make my hobbies into my day job...

As photographed, I have lots of storage (but it's actually still not enough). The space is constantly evolving - even though this photo was taken July 15, the room is already a little different. I have lots of "containers" for markers, pens, scissors, paper, pencils, blades, etc.

One tip: don't go with solid lime green curtains. I really want pink ones instead.

"The first time I learned about succulents and air plants was back when I was working in Los Angeles for a staging company called Meridith Baer and Associates. We had purchased a couple of succulents and air plants from Rolling Greens Nursery, and I remember asking the lady in charge of the plants what they were and how easy it was to care for them.

That day was the beginning of my love affair with succulents, air plants and cactus. I haven't stopped since. I now live in San Diego with my husband and my collection just keeps on growing. My plants actually inspire me to create. I can look at a particular plant and decide instantly what I want to do with it. My husband keeps teasing me about the number of plants I bring home each day from trips to nurseries.

It's not easy having to work with plants without a garden! We only have a balcony in our 2 BR condo. However, the challenge lies in being able to propagate plants and beauty despite the lack of space.

I believe everyone, whether they live in a huge mansion with an enormous garden, or whether they live in a tiny studio with a sunny window, should be able to enjoy a little green in their life. This is why I create: to impart some of that beauty and joy to the world.

I am lucky to have a space in my house just for creating. I have 4 kids, and every time I was pregnant people would say "So, does this mean you are going to have to loose your craft room?." The answer, every time, "No! I need that room." And I do need that room. I now have it set up so my kids can come in and create too, its a fun place to be.

When I get stuck, and I'm not really sure what to make next I just go in The Craft Room and pace, clean up a little and before I know it I have 20 ideas floating around in my head that need to get out. I have a few items in my Etsy shop I designed just for a studio. I have "wall pockets" I have one that I just to keep my scissors in. I also just started creating fabric storage bins. I wrap each of my packages with a strand of scrap fabric, and I keep those in a hanging storage bin! They are just fun ways to decorate my space with some of my favorite fabrics!

I have several objects in my studio that I cherish to keep me going. I love to work standing up (or crouched down on the floor like a monkey) and I had my grandfather put together a table - just the right height. My dad crafted up a storage space for some of my rubber stamps. I have a lot of special items from my sister's travels around the world. And now the room is being flooded with my kids' art - which I love. Their ideas are so fun a fresh, I might be the only one to get it and appreciate it, but that is what makes it special.

My shoppe name is ringalingbybeth. I started my Etsy endeavor in the Fall of 2009. My daughter was going into first grade and I was thinking.... what am I going to do with myself?

I really wanted to do something creative. I had seen an article in a magazine years ago about vintage button rings. I thought it was the coolest idea, so I decided to start a business creating rings for young and old with buttons, vintage earrings, seaglass or anything else that strikes me.

I love the idea of repurposing things. Creating things with a history that have a story behind them is fun - handmade items with a vintage twist. I have lived in Massachusetts all my life. I married my husband who also has lived in the same town. We actually bought the house that he grew up in, so we really have not gone far at all. It is nice to raise our daughter where our roots began. It is a house with a lot of history.

The house is over a hundred years old......and has only ever been in his family. The downside to this house is that there is no real space for my rings and things. I end up at my dining room table to make my creations which is not ideal but I am not complaining. My dining room workspace is filled with black and white toile and loads of black and white photos which are inspiring to me.

I keep all my buttons and vintage findings in old muffin tins which is just prettier then a regular plastic bin. I work on a table that was once part of a barn so the idea of repurposing is constantly around me. My favorite part of my work process is finding the materials....I love the thrill of the hunt. Check out my store often, things change daily......you never know what you are going to find.

My name is Dawn and I love creating little creatures of all kinds. Most of my creatures are made from new socks of all colours and design that I lovingly hand sew into creatures with their own cute personalities.

I have been sewing for years and started making traditional teddy bears and other soft toys. I did have my own craft room until our daughter was born but now all my materials and sewing equipment is stacked in boxes in the corner of the sitting room and my arm chair and daylight lamp are surrounded by stray socks and fabrics.

Small Shiny Objects is a shop full of ever-changing beaded gifts and jewelry. Like the shop name suggests, "small shiny objects" have always been a weakness of mine, so if it sparkles, I'm adding it in there somehow - be it natural gemstones, fancy glass, crystal, or other fascinating piece to work into the mix. My favorite things to make as of late are the beaded vases and fishbowls - I make the top ring elastic, to make the covers easily removable (and the glass washable), but use nymo thread for the rest of the netting, to keep it fluid.

The same goes into making Christmas ornaments during the holidays (they take awhile and I sold out quickly last year, so I'm actually working on some already for next winter).

For those just starting out on Etsy, I'd say this - good photos are SO important! I can't even stress how much better my shop began to look (and how much more it was being noticed) after investing in a decent digital camera and a photo box to get those items pictured "just right".

If you can't swing the dough for a photo box, though, try natural (but not glaring) daylight to get the truest colors in your pics. Really, it does a world of good. And last but not least, don't get so wrapped up in the selling end of your craft if it starts to take away from the joy of the crafting itself. I've made that mistake more than once, only to realize that beading is nothing if not fun - and if I'm having fun, well then - that's always something. ( :

Hiya, my name is Kara Joann and I am the creator of jo's studio. I am a creative by heart and love anything that is fun and unique. I went to school for graphic design and then I started jo's to share my passion. At jo's I can make just about anything that involves paper and design, like calendars, crafts circles, business cards, invites and art prints.

With my design background, I also love to make logos web banners and badges. A new thing that I am starting to get involved in is fabric covered buttons, I think they are so darling. Soon to arrive in my shop are fabric covered button hair ties, earrings, id badges, magnets, cufflinks and more.

"Hi! My name is Erica. My boyfriend Saman and I run Minty Fresh Monster Apparel. Saman designs our shirts, I run the business side of things, and the Minty Fresh Monster plays video games and reads comics while we work.

Although we are both from Minneapolis, we now live a short drive from the city in the town of Northfield, MN. I'm there finishing my fine art degree at St. Olaf college, and Saman is completing a year apprenticeship with the school's art department. The following pictures are Saman's desk, one of our storage space, and one looking out the windows on Division Street in Northfield. Northfield is a small college town of 20,000. We live in a one-room apartment above a pet shop. It's kinda cute.

Saman draws all the time. Robots and monsters are definitely favorites, but he draws pretty much everything. We decide together which of these drawings will become vector art and then eventually make it on a t-shirt. He either uses Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.

Once the shirts are printed and ready to ship, they become my responsibility. Next year we hope to get a separate studio, but for now shirts are folded on the kitchen table and stored on shelves running down the wall of our apartment. It will be great to get some more space so we have room for a few more designs!"

My name is Roxanne Tobaison, I live in sunny, central Florida – USA, and married with 2 daughters
Media of choice is watercolors and I have been painting since 1979. After the birth of my first daughter, I tried my hand at oil painting then watercolors. I was hooked and have never stopped since.

I am a Florida native and the area is brimming over with natural wonders, treasures, beauty and so many historical landmarks. Did I mention…I love the history of our area, which the Tampa Bay area is extremely rich. I paint to preserve and many of them are commissioned works.

You can say my watercolors are: Frameable, Wearable and Collectable.Above all, my camera is my best friend. I take all my reference shots. My materials are watercolors, acrylics and occasionally pen and inks. Most of my works are representational and realistic; however I have enjoyed some abstracts as seen mostly in my pendants.

Recently, I added a line of glass tile pendants necklaces that showcase my original watercolor paintings. These are affordable pieces of art that can be enjoyed and worn too. I title these pieces and take pride in the little originals. Also I have started doing ACEO’s which are like baseball trading cards – artists trading cards which are collectable

The main thing is that I feel blessed to have this talent and that others like it. Of course we like to sell, but it’s therapeutic, fulfilling and great when someone likes what you do. Get rich doing it – I DON’T think so….but riches can be measured in many ways.

Having retired from the art festivals show after 30 years, I stumbled onto Etsy when purchasing from some of the fabulous craftsman and artisans. Why not give it a go??? What would I have to lose?? Didn’t actual realize the time involvement or the addiction!

Each day is an adventure in itself. With my morning coffee, to jumpstart myself, I read the Bible and then off to Etsy, go exercise and back to etsy… Work around the house and errands, then back to etsy…You know, I actually DO paint too! Then back to etsy. I think you get the picture…my husband sure does. He calls me an etsy-acholic.

Hi, I’m Mercella. I think that I have always been a bit of an entrepreneur. Even as a young child, I made and sold various handcrafted items. I started my business in 2000 at the age of 12 by making beaded jewelry and selling it at my mom's job. In 2006, I decided to start selling on Etsy and in boutiques. My name is Amy Lilley, and I live in Newark-on-Trent (UK). I have always loved art and making things, but had very little time to pursue this interest whilst studying an English degree at university. In my final year of university I was fortunate to meet my best friend, and love of my life, and we married soon after I graduated (last August). Being out of uni, out of work, and living in a new place, I had mixed emotions.

On the one hand I found myself overjoyed at the excitement of our starting out our new life together, yet I also felt a bit down and isolated because of all of the changes. It was the need to occupy myself whilst I was looking for a job that really sparked my creative side. At university I had dressed a bit wacky, and was often mistaken for an art student. Now married, I had ‘toned’ it down a bit in relation to my dress sense, and I think making headbands and jewellery became my more hands-on creative outlet.

My favourite place to work is at my kitchen table! I spend so much time in the kitchen, and love all of the hubbub that goes on in this part of the house. To me it is a place of productivity, play, relaxation, fellowship, family, and inspiration. I can't think of a better place to be creative!

I love all things cute and girlie, and consider my pieces fun and playful, yet pretty and elegant. I want women of all ages to look and feel every bit as beautiful as they are in my pieces, and hope to grow my ‘Blushing Dove Boutique’ into a small business.

For many years I have been in love with Japanese fashion, and more specifically with Lolita and Aristocrat trends. While they are subcultures themselves, there are many subcultures contained within them. I try to create a variety of Lolita and Aristocrat styles, so that no matter your preference, classic or punk, gothic or sweet, you will find something that appeals to your personal tastes.

Part of my motivation for starting Jilted Coquette was the insatiable need to create. I’m a very tactile individual so working directly with a material is more satisfying to me than drawing or painting. My artistic roots are in Printmaking and New Genres, so I’m an odd combination of meticulous processes and subversion; I pay great attention to the smallest of details but also like to push boundaries, especially to an absurd extent.

The second half of my motivation came from the high price and inaccessibility of Lolita and Aristocrat items in the US. If you want to buy a name brand piece, you will have to order it online and have it shipped internationally, or find someone online via forums who is reselling items, often used. A simply adorned name brand headdress can easily cost $40 US while more elaborate pieces can price for much higher. I strive to create pieces that are not only beautiful and intricate, but also affordable.

While I derive my inspiration from a variety of Aristocrat and Lolita styles, it is not my intention to replicate a specific brand style. Each adornment is one of a kind and a labor of love. At the risk of over romanticizing them, deep down I consider each one to be a work of art.

I began making hair adornments earlier this year, and only opened my etsy shop in late May. I consider my work with Jilted Coquette to be a full time job and easily spend 10-12 hours a day creating and promoting my pieces. Having studied art and not business, I’m unfamiliar with entrepreneurship but I hope that, with hard work and dedication, I will one day be successful enough to open my own storefront.

Science and Art Come Together

TopazTurtle jewelry designs is what you get when science and art comes together. I’m a scientist by training and I guess I never grew out of conducting experiments even though I moved away from the laboratory in my day job.

Working with resin, reminds me of my time in the lab as it involves a lot of planning, preparing, measuring, mixing and finishing.

Planning and preparing usually involves coming up with a design, trying it out in polymer clay and then moving to the mould making stage. Once the basic shape is ready, there is more planning to decide colours and effects. Then the fun begins with the mixing.

I tend to mix my own colours for my bangles and beads. I just love watching the different hues emerge as I mix two or more colors together. I also love to experiment with embedding items in the resin. Everything is fair game - things I find in the garden, the house and my jewelry making supplies.

And like a good scientist I have to take copious notes so that I can reproduce my experiments. I’ve forgotten about that aspect of lab work but it is slowly coming back to me.

Once the resin is ready I have to knuckle down and do all the sanding and smoothing. It’s hard and dirty work but also very gratifying to see the finished product emerge. Health and safety is important to me and at this stage I use gloves, goggles and dust mask as protection I figure I want to keep making jewelry for as long as I can and I should take all the precautions I can. Once I’m happy with the product, it’s a quick wash and dry and a little more polishing. Making resin jewelry is a very satisfying exercise for me and I think everyone should find something that they do that they really enjoy.

Here is a picture of Saunthra's lovely and inspirational worktable."It's an old computer table that I stripped, painted and stenciled.The wheels come in useful as I can move it around and push it away into a cupboard when I have to clean up. You can't see from the pic but it's in front of my tv, so I get to listen into programs while I work. My favourite show at the moment is Glee. Just love it."

Vintage Whale is a collaboration of two college students, Kristine and Lily. We're both from Oklahoma but go to colleges in different states. We’ve been creating and crafting for Etsy for about a month now and really enjoy it! Our shop consists of both vintage and handmade items. Before we started Etsy we always had thrifting adventures and were always on the hunt for vintage goodies for ourselves.

Soon we decided we would like to share our lovely finds with others. We’re both really inspired by vintage and re-used items and it’s evident in our shop. Most of our items are made of scrap fabric or buttons we find lying about. We enjoy taking old things and giving them new life as necklaces, headbands, bobby pins or even cards. We’re always thinking up new ideas for items we can make for our shop and don’t usually create more than a few different versions of any one item.

Our creative process is pretty fluid and flexible because we create whatever we feel like making at that particular moment. We don’t have a designated work space but usually have movie nights that double as craft days where we watch old movies and work on our shop. Usually our crafting supplies are kept neatly in boxes or storage drawers we can roll out into the living room so we can craft and watch movies.

Once we finish our creations we love to go outside and take pictures of them on pretty paper or old books. Nothing goes into our shop that we wouldn’t buy ourselves, and we really hope people find something they love as much as we loved making it.

My name is Melissa and I am the proud & hopeful owner of Mel's Art Buffet. Opening my Etsy shop was a huge step for me. I have enjoyed the site for so many years but was intimidated to take the leap. Mel's Art Buffet opened at the end of January 2010 & I couldn't be more pleased. The community has been so welcoming & friendly. It's a lovely home.

I have always had the need to make something, anything. Over the years I have concentrated my creative juices to focus primarily on jewelry. I started going to bead shows & making pieces for myself. And, one day it occurred to me, as my personal stash began to grow out of control, maybe someone else would like to wear this? I am self taught & anticipate learning the next technique which will undoubtedly lead to a world of possibilities.

Polymer clay is currently my medium of choice. I have been working with polymer for over a year now & have not even begun to push it to its limits. It does everything I ask and never argues. Polymer clay is a flexible blank canvas and has completely changed my jewelry designing. A whole new world has opened right in front of me, so exciting! I have been combining polymer clay with my signature thread inlay that I have been developing. The thread inlay evolved from my infatuation with light shades made from string, popular in the 70's. My jewelry is definitely different. But I hope that my unique style will catch on.

Inspiration comes easy to me & feel so lucky for this. My main inspiration is derived from food. I know this sounds crazy but stick with me...Quite a few years ago, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which means no gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, & oats. So, being on a restricted diet I eat visually what I'm not allowed physically. I love to read recipes but more so I love to look at food pics! Alluring food pictures & blogs are where I find major inspiration. I think food is beautiful & the colors are simply pure & inspiring. I can look at a picture of pizza & draw three jewelry sketches. So this is how Mel's Art Buffet blossomed, by combining my greatest loves in life, food & art.

I don't have much luck with organization in my work space, see photo... but I do have one idea to share - I recently purchased 50+ small bags of seed beads from artbeads.com that were on sale for a $1 each. Seemed like a great idea at the time. Still excited when I received the package. Unwrapping, unwrapping, still unwrapping. Where in the world am I going to put 50 small baggies of beads? If I put them a small drawer organizer, I will rarely sift through to find the right color. After several days of contemplation, I found a solution that would work for me. I took a large Rubbermaid lid from a storage bin that had been sitting in the corner and drilled two holes at the top. Once I ran string through the holes, I was able to hang from the wall. I love velcro & can't seem to keep enough on hand. I placed a circle dot of velcro on the back of each baggie adhered the other end to the lid. Now all 50 bags are displayed for easy use & visibility :)

I am a textile artist and eco designer. I love to take old, unwanted, fabrics and transform them into something unique, fun, and desirable. I like to use all kinds of fabrics in my creations. I have made hats from doilies, bags from curtains, and dresses from sheets. The only limitation to my creativity is how much fabric I have to work with. Because, I like to make so many different kinds of items I have two etsy shops. Green Trunk Designs is my accessory shop, where I sell my hand crafted hats and OOAk mat bags. Green Trunk Clothing is where I sell my line of funky eco clothing and Vintage Reproduction clothing.

My Husband is a talented photographer and takes most of the photos for my shop. He is very supportive of my work; for which I am very grateful, especially considering we live in a one room apartment, and my sewing projects tend to take up a lot of space.

My creative work space consists of a lovely vintage desk, and an old green army trunk. This trunk is special to me because it used to belong to my Dad. It was issued to him when he was in the military. I inherited the green trunk as a kid to use as my toy box, and now that I’m older…well it is still my toy box and the name of my shops.
